Skoda Octavia vRS

With a price difference of just $270 between the two engines, which one you go for will probably depend more on whether you’re a business user or not. There’s not a weak link here, but the petrol motor is the more enticing. Speculators in the financial asset can profit, even when the project they have financed fails.

Economic bubbles have also been necessary. Occasionally, the object of speculation has been one of those fundamental technological innovations — canals, railroads, electrification, automobiles, aviation, computers, the Internet — that eventually transforms the economy. In these cases, the prospects of short-term financial gain from riding a bubble mobilizes far more investor capital than prudent professional investors would otherwise dole out. Moreover, the very momentum of the bubble forces those careful investors to join the herd lest their relative underperformance leave them with no funds to invest: Warren Buffet, who successfully steered clear of the great dotcom/telecom bubble of 1998–2000, is the exception that proves the rule.

Economic bubbles, as everyone knows, have also inevitably burst. And the consequences can be grave or transient. Productive bubbles have generally followed investments by the state — that other source of financial support for projects of uncertain economic value. For example, the bonds that financed the building of the Erie Canal in the early nineteenth century were guaranteed by the state of New York. At the start of the twentieth century, the government granted AT&T a monopoly on long-distance telephony in return for universal service, which helped make voice communication ubiquitous. Manning could serve sentence

Raelean Finch, a former Army captain who visits the barracks regularly, described life inside as “monotonous.”

The prison’s daily routines are “fairly repetitive, restrictive and militarized,” said Anita Gorecki-Robbins, a Washington military defense lawyer. And inmates have no Internet access.

Army regulations require prisoners to do “a full day of useful, constructive work” and a 40-hour workweek. Prisoners have maintenance, warehouse, laundry and kitchen details but also have access to multiple vocational training programs, including graphic arts and barbering.

An inmate’s daily schedule _ when he rises and sleeps _ depends upon when he works. There is a graveyard shift and working it allows an inmate to sleep until early afternoon, Finch said.

Immunotherapy is one of eight trends that Goldman Sachs analysts predict will cause “creative destruction.” The words, which seem polar opposites, describe huge events that can disrupt existing conditions and potentially reshape industries.Elegant solarcarport features in chiffon.

I think the recent acquisition of the staid Washington Post by e-book pioneer Jeff Bezos of Amazon may be a disruptor, though it is too early to say. (This did not make it to Goldman’s list, which was released on Aug. 5.)

On Goldman’s list is 3D printing. Based on a blueprint of a digital model, the printer builds (not just prints) a real product layer by layer, one at a time. Also called additive manufacturing, 3D printing can use a variety of materials, like plastic (to make gadgets), metal (to make guns) and fiber (to make clothing).

Companies such as Stratasys and 3D Systems have used 3D printing to make industrial parts for automobile and airplane companies (such as Boeing).

But 3D printing has expanded beyond heavy industry. Organovo in San Diego, California, makes bioprinters to create human tissue for medical research and regenerative purposes. The printers have already created hearing aids, dental implants, prosthetic limbs.

Organovo can create blood vessels, lung tissue and even tumors for research, in partnership with drug companies Pfizer and United Therapeutics.

Creating functional human organs is likely still ten years away. But 3D printing has already revolutionized medicine. The CNBC reported in 2012 that Wake Forest University in North Carolina had teamed up with the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine to create cells that could be placed directly on an injury to make the wound heal faster.

Cornell University has created not just bone implants and knee cartilage but also heart valves.


Light-emitting diodes (LED) bulbs are also disruptors. While not exactly novel, the newest ones, particularly the Cree bulb, are far better than the older versions. The Cree LED bulb is 85 percent more energy-efficient than conventional ones.

A Cree bulb provides 25,000 hours of light (other LEDs can last up to 50,000 hours) while the incandescent bulb is good for only 1,000 hours. Best of all, the Cree LED bulb is affordable. One bulb costs around $10.

Goldman says e-cigarettes are 99-percent less harmful than tobacco products. They are also cheaper. But Goldman warns that the FDA may soon put restrictions on e-cigarettes and taxes may increase.

Some studies show that e-cigarettes may be as addictive as the real thing. Cynics point out that e-cigarettes are now being promoted by an industry in search of new (addicted) customers. Coastal residents of NC get glimpse

Eileen Marrone is all for alternative energy, but the prospect of giant offshore wind farms in the Atlantic Ocean is giving her pause after she saw a demonstration of 460-foot-tall turbines off the coast of North Carolina.

A video simulation by the U.S. Department of the Interior shows rows of red lights blinking in unison on the horizon, 11 miles from the coast. The flashing hazard lights are required to warn pilots of the presence of turbine spires equipped with spinning blades over the ocean.

Marrone, who lives in Calabash near the South Carolina border, was one of several dozen area residents who attended the demonstration Wednesday at the South Brunswick Islands Center in Carolina Shores. The visualization study shows how the turbines would appear at night and during the day under a range of conditions. It concludes that the turbines 11 miles out at sea would be visible from shore about 35 percent of the time.A ledceramicbulb is the clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony.

“I thought that was deeply disturbing,” Marrone said of the night lights. “I can’t image how people who live on the beach would feel about that – red lights constantly blinking.”

The visualization study is an early stage of the federal process of leasing national waters to wind farm developers. The process for North Carolina has been underway for three years, but it could be a decade before offshore wind farms are developed off the state’s coast. Still, Republican Gov. Pat McCrory has thrown his support behind offshore wind power as a boost to local economies and to energy companies in the state that make components for the wind industry.

One of the potential applicants is Dominion, which sells power in the northeastern corner of North Carolina. Chapman said that such a project here may not even be economically viable at the present time because offshore wind energy is three times more expensive than electricity produced from cheap and abundant natural gas.

Other complications include objections from the fishing, tourism and shipping industries.

“Positioning fixed wind turbines in close proximity to maritime transportation corridors and in the pathway of oceangoing ships should simply not be allowed to be contemplated,” the World Shipping Council wrote to federal officials. “The environmental damage and costs of a single allision (a shipping term that means “collision”) between a ship and a wind turbine, as well as the potential loss of life and property, could easily exceed any benefits” of placing such turbines in the area.

The National Park Service, citing harm to the coastal tourism industry, recommends that no turbines be placed nearer than about 30 miles from North Carolina’s shore, about four times farther than the current area would allow for.

The Marine Mammal Commission warns there are insufficient data to gauge the risks to disrupting “calving and nursery grounds” for the endangered right whale.

The Town of Kitty Hawk this year passed a resolution opposing wind farms closer than 20 miles off the coast.

The day the lights went out

The U.S. electrical grid is better managed and more flexible a decade after its largest blackout but remains vulnerable to increasingly extreme weather, cybersecurity threats, and stress caused by shifts in where and how power is produced.

Many worry the grid isn’t fully prepared for the new and emerging challenges, even though an analysis conducted for The Associated Press shows maintenance spending has steadily increased since North America’s largest blackout.

“This job of reliability is kind of impossible, in the sense that there’s just so many things that could happen that it’s hard to be sure that you’re covering all the bases,” said William Booth, a senior electricity adviser with the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The industry has mostly addressed the failures blamed on a tree branch in Ohio that touched a power line and set off outages that cascaded across eight states and parts of Canada the afternoon of Aug. 14, 2003, darkening computer screens, halting commuter trains, and cutting lights and air conditioners for 50 million people. Grid operators who didn’t initially realize what was happening now have a nearly real-time view of the system and are better equipped to stop problems from growing. Utilities share more information and systematically trim trees near high-voltage power lines.

Electricity customers have been giving the grid a bit of breathing room. Power demand has remained flat or even fallen in recent years as lighting, devices, appliances, homes and businesses have gotten more efficient and economic growth has been sluggish. All that reduces stress on the grid.

At the same time, aging coal and nuclear plants are shutting down in the face of higher maintenance costs, pollution restrictions and competition from cheap natural gas. Renewable generation such as wind turbines and solar panels is being installed, adding power that’s difficult to plan for and manage.

Temperatures and storms are getting more extreme, according to federal data, and that increases stress on the grid by creating spikes in demand or knocking out lines or power plants. “The grid that exists today wasn’t designed for what everybody wants to do with it,” says Joe Welch, CEO of ITC Holdings Corp., the largest independent transmission company in the U.S.

The electric power industry did respond directly to the issues that sparked the blackout. An analysis of spending on maintenance and transmission equipment by more than 200 utilities nationwide conducted for the AP by Ventyx, a software and data services firm that works with electric utilities, shows that spending rose sharply in the years after the blackout.

The bulk power system is changing, a result of the declining use of coal and nuclear power and the rising use of natural gas and renewable power.

One-sixth of the existing coal capacity is projected to close by 2020, much of it at small, inefficient units in the Ohio River Valley, the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast, according to the Energy Information Administration. The permanent closure of four nuclear reactors in California, Florida and Wisconsin was announced this year, and reactors in New York, Vermont and elsewhere may also close.

Plant shutdowns mean there’s less of a cushion in electrical capacity when power demand is high or problems arise. Shutdowns also create pockets of transmission congestion or regions where power is scarce. Both situations drive up power prices for customers, make the grid less stable and present planning challenges.

“That is a new stress that we hadn’t thought about” a decade ago, said Scott Moore, vice president of transmission engineering and project services at American Electric Power, one of the nation’s biggest utilities.

The reliability report raises concerns about the Texas grid, one of the three major U.S. grids, where the amount of wiggle room in capacity is expected to dip below targeted minimum levels.

Solar power gains ground in Iowa

Earlier this year, MidAmerican Energy completed a 37.6-kilowatt installation on the rooftop of its downtown Sioux City office building that includes 160 photovoltaic solar panels, which can each produce up to 235 watts.

Company spokeswoman Abby Bottenfield said MidAmerican Energy currently has no programs or recommendations for homeowners looking to convert to solar power.

Western Iowa is actually a slightly better location for solar power than Eastern Iowa, according to Haman. He explained that the best site to harness solar power is the extreme southwestern corner of the state near Hamburg, Iowa.
